study start: 1. September
To ensure a healthy planet and strong economy for current and future generations, a transition to a circular economy is needed. A circular economy is characterized by a system of closed loop processes. Ideally no waste is created, renewable energy sources are used, and raw materials, components and products retain their value. This transition asks for innovative engineering solutions that require a new way of thinking.
The bachelor's Circular Engineering prepares you to be the engineer of the future. In a circular economy, resources are reused and waste is minimised. Both are needed to create a long-lasting healthy planet and a strong economy. Circular engineers play a key role in the transition towards the circular economy as they have the knowledge and skills to design, develop and optimise products, processes and services to enhance circularity for a sustainable society and industry.
The bachelor Circular Engineering offers a full-time programme, which is divided into six semesters and will have a duration of three years. Each semester splits up into 3 periods, following the 8-8-4 week model of Maastricht University. This 8-8-4 model means that period 1 and 2 are eight weeks long and consist of courses and skills training. Period 3 is four weeks long, devoted to a project in which you apply the knowledge and skills gained in the courses and skills trainings. An exam week is included in the 8 or 4 weeks. During this exam week, no other educational activities are scheduled so you can optimally study and prepare for your exams. The programme has been designed to first provide students with a strong basis in engineering and related disciplines, after which they can tailor the second and third year to their strengths and interests.
The main method of instruction in the bachelor Circular Engineering is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). In a PBL environment, you work in small tutorial groups of about 15 students on scientific and engineering questions and challenges, usually in the form of case studies. You conduct discussions, exchange knowledge and formulate your learning goals as a group. By actively addressing real-life issues, you better grasp the theory and learn to apply your insights to various situations. The variety of perspectives enlivens the discussions and allows you to experience the true strength of your group’s cultural diversity. Moreover, you gain essential skills, such as presenting your viewpoints, debating, writing academic texts and collaborating with peers.
The bachelor Circular Engineering employs Research-Based Learning (RBL) in addition to PBL. Gradually throughout the programme, you are faced with engineering challenges of increasing complexity. RBL starts with small engineering challenges in the tutorial groups and skills training sessions in year 1. Subsequently, it is further developed in the various design projects throughout the curriculum, in which you make your own discoveries and research and develop technical solutions, in addition to learning about existing theories and systems. RBL culminates into the individual bachelor thesis. In skills training sessions and projects you work at our state-of-the-art engineering laboratories.
Provides students with a solid foundation with courses in mathematics, physics, chemical engineering and biotechnology.
Students are given the freedom to choose their own personal curriculum by choosing from an extensive list of elective courses, skills training and projects under the guidance of an academic advisor. Examples of courses are Cell Biology, Electronics, Organic Chemistry, Remake–Reuse-Repair-Recycle, Data Science and Analysis, Energy Systems and many more. These courses allow students to expand their engineering “toolbox” and broaden or specialise in their expertise.
Students select one concentration (i.e. predetermined set) of courses and skills training to provide them with thorough knowledge within a specific engineering domain: Circular Chemical Engineering, Sustainable Biotechnology or Engineering Physics for Sustainable Manufacturing.
You finish your bachelor with a thesis on a circularity challenge within a concentration. The concentrations are directly connected to developments at the Brightlands campuses and relevant companies, industry, non-profit organisations in the region. Parts of your education and research will take place at the Brightlands campuses, right in the middle of and often in collaboration with industry.
The fact that all courses are taught in English, does not solely define the international character of Maastricht Science Programme. Staff and students come from all corners of the world to study and live in Maastricht. Surrounded by all of the cultural, social, and educational events that make it such a vibrant city, you will spend most of your time with your fellow students, in class and outside. We have set up a special student-only study and recreational area, the Common Room, where your different cultural backgrounds and interests will surely lead to interesting discussions. It is all part of the inspiring and stimulating environment we like to offer, one which not only challenges you intellectually, but also empowers your personal development.
At Circular Engineering we have a lot to offer. The bachelor's programme is for highly motivated students with a passion for engineering and a drive to contribute to a more sustainable society and industry, and are willing to contribute actively to our international community. In short, we are looking for students who enrich our international community with their talents and personalities.
